Sweden Visa From the UAE: A Schengen Guide

UAE residents applying for a Sweden visa must submit their application through VFS Global, the outsourced visa service provider for the Embassy of Sweden in Abu Dhabi, at either the Dubai or Abu Dhabi application centre. The process follows the standard Schengen tourist visa framework, with a few requirements specific to Sweden. This guide covers who handles the application, where to apply, required documents, Sweden-specific tips, and processing times.

Who Handles Sweden Visa Applications in the UAE

The Embassy of Sweden in Abu Dhabi is the authority that decides on Schengen visa applications for Sweden from UAE residents. The embassy does not accept walk-in applications and has outsourced the collection of forms, supporting documents, and biometric data to VFS Global. Applicants book an appointment and submit their file at a VFS Global centre, and VFS forwards the file to the embassy for a decision. The embassy has stated it does not cooperate with agents or other external actors who offer paid services, and that no external actor can influence the processing time or outcome of a decision.

Where to Apply: Dubai and Abu Dhabi

UAE residents can apply for a Sweden Schengen visa at VFS Global centres in both Dubai and Abu Dhabi. The Dubai centre is located at Wafi Mall, Phase 5, First Floor, Umm Hurair 2. The Abu Dhabi centre is located at World Trade Centre Mall, Level B2 (Lower Ground), Khalifa Bin Zayed The 1st Street. Applicants should apply at the centre closest to their emirate of residence, though both locations generally accept applicants from across the UAE. An appointment must be booked in advance online, and applicants attend in person to give biometric data such as fingerprints, unless these were already registered in the EU Visa Information System within the past 59 months.

Standard Documents for a Sweden Tourist Visa

Every Sweden tourist visa application from Dubai or Abu Dhabi should include the following:

  • A completed and signed Schengen visa application form, in English or Swedish.
  • A valid passport issued within the last 10 years, valid for at least 3 months beyond the intended departure, with at least 2 blank pages.
  • A recent passport-size color photograph on a white background, meeting ICAO photo standards.
  • Copies of the bio-data page and any previous Schengen visas in the passport.
  • Travel medical insurance valid across all Schengen states, with minimum coverage of EUR 30,000.
  • A copy of the round-trip flight reservation.
  • Proof of accommodation, such as a hotel booking confirmation or an invitation letter if staying with a host in Sweden.
  • Bank statements for the past 3 months showing sufficient funds for the trip.
  • An employer letter confirming employment, salary, and approved leave dates, or a trade license copy for business owners.
  • A copy of the UAE residence visa, valid at least 3 months beyond the intended departure date.

Sweden-Specific Tips for UAE Residents

Applicants should apply to Sweden specifically when Sweden is either the sole Schengen destination or the main destination of a multi-country trip, based on length of stay or purpose of visit. If a trip covers several Schengen countries with no single main destination, apply through the country of first entry instead. UAE residents visiting a friend or family member in Sweden should ask their host to send an invitation letter that includes the host’s address and contact details, along with a copy of the host’s passport or residence permit and, where available, a Swedish Population Register extract known as a personbevis. This supports the accommodation details and is often requested for family and friends visit categories. Dubai and Abu Dhabi applicants should also apply well before the peak European summer travel season, from May to August, since VFS appointment slots for Sweden fill up quickly during this period. VFS Global also offers an optional prime-time appointment service for an additional fee, which some applicants use to get a preferred slot, though this does not affect the outcome of the visa decision.

Processing Times for Sweden Visa Applications

Under the Schengen Visa Code, embassies usually decide within 15 calendar days of submission, and some cases take longer. This applies to Sweden visa applications from UAE residents in Dubai and Abu Dhabi too. Applications that require further checks can take up to 45 calendar days, and processing can run closer to that upper limit during busy summer months. Applicants should not book non-refundable flights or hotels before a decision is issued, and should submit up to 6 months in advance and no later than 15 days before the intended visit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I apply for a Sweden visa in Abu Dhabi if I live in Dubai?

Yes. VFS Global centres in the UAE generally accept applications from residents across the country, so a Dubai resident can book in Abu Dhabi if that is more convenient, and vice versa.

Do I need to give fingerprints every time I apply for a Sweden visa?

Not necessarily. If an applicant’s fingerprints were already collected for a Schengen visa within the past 59 months and are still valid in the EU Visa Information System, they do not need to be taken again.

How far in advance should UAE residents book their Sweden visa appointment?

Applications can be lodged up to 6 months before travel, and should be submitted at least 15 calendar days beforehand. Booking early is recommended, especially during the European summer travel season from May to August.
