Urgent Switzerland Visa Appointment: UAE Guide

21 August 20268 min readFastSchengen team

UAE residents applying for a Switzerland Schengen visa cannot buy a faster decision, and there is no fast track that moves an application to the front of the queue. What applicants can sometimes do is secure an earlier submission slot through legitimate channels offered by VFS Global, the official visa application centre operator for Switzerland in Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Which Centre Handles Switzerland Visa Applications in the UAE

VFS Global is the authorised visa application centre operator for Switzerland in the UAE. That is worth stating clearly, because several other Schengen countries in the UAE use BLS International or TLScontact. The Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs states that after a public procurement procedure, “a new contract has been awarded to VFS Global for the operation of Visa Application Centres, effective 1st July 2025”. The Embassy in Abu Dhabi confirms applications “have to be submitted at the premises of our external service provider VFS Global”, and are then forwarded to the Embassy.

The visa section in Abu Dhabi handles residents of the UAE and Bahrain whose main destination is Switzerland or Liechtenstein. Applications listing another Schengen country as the main destination are not accepted. The Consulate General in Dubai takes no applications at its counters, and states that “All Schengen visa applications are handled by VFS Global”.

Dubai and Abu Dhabi Centres

The Embassy confirms that VFS Global centres for Switzerland are in Abu Dhabi and Dubai, and in Manama in Bahrain. Both UAE centres serve the same Embassy, so a Dubai resident is not restricted to the Dubai centre. Availability can differ between the cities on any given day, and checking both is one of the few genuinely useful things an applicant can do. Take addresses and opening hours from the VFS contact page, not third party listings, since VFS has relocated UAE offices before.

Legitimate Ways to Get an Earlier Switzerland Visa Appointment

Complete the Online Form Before You Try to Book

Under the new contract, “Applicants will be required to complete the visa application form online before scheduling an appointment”. Anyone who has not done this cannot book, which costs people slots that were open when they started looking. Without an appointment booked in advance, neither VFS Global nor the visa section will accept an application.

Book Directly and Ignore Anyone Selling Slots

The Embassy states that bookings are free of charge, and that it “doesn’t have any agreement with Travel agencies or other Visa service providers for the deposit of visa applications”. VFS Global has said the same in the UAE press, warning against individuals “promising visa appointments or guaranteed visas for an additional fee”, and stating that “There is no fast-track service for Schengen visas”.

Monitoring Cancellations and New Slots

Calendars on the VFS portal change as other applicants cancel or reschedule. Checking regularly, including outside working hours, and searching a range of dates rather than one preferred day, is the realistic way to find an earlier opening. Do this for both cities.

Paid Optional Services at the Centre

VFS Global sells optional services at many of its centres. Its own description of Premium Lounge covers privacy and comfort, quicker submission, courier return of the passport and real time notifications. Prime Time covers visiting the centre outside regular opening hours. Read those benefits carefully: they describe the day of submission, not the date you are given and not the outcome. Neither claims an earlier appointment or a faster decision.

We could not independently verify the full list of optional services and prices for Switzerland at the UAE centres, because that part of the VFS portal does not render for automated checking. Check the description and price on the portal when booking, and question any service promising an earlier date.

Documented Urgent Cases

Switzerland applies a narrower urgent route than some of its Schengen neighbours. The Embassy states that “Urgent visa processing will only be performed given high Swiss interests (political reasons or life-threatening medical interventions)”. Requests go in writing to abudhabi.visa [at] eda.admin.ch, or through the urgent appointment form on the Embassy website. A holiday booking, a non-refundable flight or a routine business trip does not meet that bar, and approval is at the Embassy’s discretion.

An Earlier Appointment Does Not Mean a Faster Visa Decision

An earlier slot only changes when the file is lodged. It does not change how quickly the Swiss authorities review it. The Embassy states that “As a general rule, a decision is taken by the Consulate within 15 days”, and that this may be extended. Where a file is referred to the authorities in Switzerland, “it may take up to 12 weeks until a decision is made”. Nationals of certain countries face a consultation with other Schengen states that can add up to 14 calendar days.

VFS Global states the same on its own Switzerland UAE pages: “the application processing time and decisions on visa applications are the sole prerogative of the Embassy or Consulate. VFS Global has no role to play in these areas of the application process”. It adds that acceptance of an application by VFS Global does not guarantee the issuance of a visa.

Be sceptical of specific waiting-time numbers. Neither the Embassy nor VFS Global publishes a current wait time for Switzerland appointments from the UAE, and figures quoted on agency websites are unsourced. The only official guidance is the application window: six months before travel at the earliest, 15 days before departure at the latest.

Biometrics and the 2026 Entry/Exit System

Fingerprints are collected every 59 months from the age of 12 and held in the Visa Information System for five years. If yours were taken within that window you may not need to attend in person, but you must supply a copy of the previous visa sticker. If unsure, attend.

Switzerland is in the Schengen area but not the EU, and the EU Entry/Exit System applies to it anyway, because participation follows Schengen membership. The State Secretariat for Migration confirms the rollout began on 12 October 2025, and the European Commission confirms the system became fully operational on 10 April 2026, replacing passport stamping with a digital record of entries and exits including facial image and fingerprints. That affects the border crossing rather than the appointment, but first entries can take longer at Swiss airports.

Practical Tips for UAE Residents

  • Complete the online application form first. It is a precondition for booking.
  • Compare open dates at both the Dubai and Abu Dhabi centres before choosing where to apply.
  • Apply early. Applications open six months before travel and close 15 days before departure.
  • Budget for both charges: EUR 90 for adults, shown as AED 395 by VFS, plus a VFS service charge of AED 112.58 per application. All fees are non-refundable.
  • Confirm Switzerland or Liechtenstein is genuinely your main destination, or the application is refused on that basis alone.
  • Have insurance covering at least EUR 30,000, the No Objection Letter in original with signature and stamp, and residence documents valid one month beyond your return.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Switzerland handled by VFS Global or BLS in the UAE?

VFS Global. The Swiss Federal Department of Foreign Affairs awarded the contract with effect from 1 July 2025, and the Consulate General in Dubai confirms all Schengen applications go through VFS Global. BLS operates for some other Schengen countries in the UAE, not for Switzerland.

Can I pay for an earlier Switzerland visa appointment in Dubai?

No. VFS Global states there is no fast-track service for Schengen visas, and the Embassy states that bookings are free and that it has no agreement with travel agencies for lodging applications. Paid optional services relate to comfort and timing at the centre on the day.

Can I apply in Abu Dhabi if I live in Dubai?

Yes. Both centres serve the same visa section at the Embassy in Abu Dhabi, so check availability at either.

How long does a decision take after submission?

As a general rule the decision is taken within 15 days, and this can be extended. If the file is referred to the authorities in Switzerland it may take up to 12 weeks. No paid service shortens this.

What counts as an urgent case for a Swiss visa?

The Embassy limits urgent processing to cases of high Swiss interest, described as political reasons or life-threatening medical interventions. Requests go in writing to the visa section. Booked flights and holiday plans do not qualify.
