Bulgaria Visa From the UAE: A Schengen Guide
Bulgaria became a full part of the Schengen area for air and sea travel on 31 March 2024, and the last checks at its land borders were lifted on 1 January 2025. For UAE residents, this means a Bulgarian short-stay visa is now a standard Schengen visa: one approval lets you travel across the whole Schengen area, and Sofia, Plovdiv, and the Black Sea coast are as easy to reach as any other member state.
This guide covers the C-type Schengen visa only, meaning tourism, business trips, family visits, and visas for a nanny or domestic worker travelling with a UAE household. It does not cover work permits, study visas, or what to do after a refusal.
Who Needs a Bulgaria Schengen Visa From the UAE
If you hold a passport from a country that requires a Schengen visa and you live in the UAE, you need a visa to visit Bulgaria regardless of your UAE residence status. Bulgarian and other EU citizens’ family members, and long-stay applicants, follow a separate consular process, but the great majority of UAE-based travellers applying for a tourist, business, or family visit trip will use the short-stay C-type route described below.
Where to Apply
Short-stay Bulgaria visa applications from the UAE are submitted through VFS Global, the visa application centre appointed by the Bulgarian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Applicants can find center locations in Dubai and Abu Dhabi and book appointments through the official VFS Bulgaria portal. The VFS helpline for Bulgaria applications in the UAE is +971 4 205 5850.
Because appointment slots are released periodically and can fill quickly, it is worth checking the portal regularly rather than waiting until close to your travel date.
Documents and Purpose of Travel
Whatever the purpose of your trip, you will need a completed application form, a valid passport, a passport photo, proof of accommodation, a travel itinerary, valid travel medical insurance covering the Schengen area, and evidence of sufficient funds. Depending on the purpose of travel, additional documents apply:
- Tourist visits: a hotel booking or invitation letter and a return ticket.
- Business visits: an invitation letter from the Bulgarian host company and a letter from your UAE employer.
- Family visits: an invitation from the host in Bulgaria along with proof of the relationship.
- Nanny or domestic worker visas: documentation showing the employment relationship with the travelling family and proof that the household is travelling together.
Fees and Processing Time
The standard Schengen visa fee is EUR 90 for adults and EUR 45 for children aged six to under twelve, following the fee increase that took effect across the Schengen area on 11 June 2024. Bulgaria applies the same EU-wide fee schedule as every other Schengen member.
On processing time, embassies usually decide within 15 calendar days of submission, as set by the Schengen Visa Code, and some cases take longer. There is no way to guarantee a faster outcome, so applicants planning travel around a specific date should submit their documents with a wide margin before departure.
Seasonal Demand
Bulgaria’s Black Sea coast and ski resorts see distinct summer and winter peaks, and Sofia’s status as a low-cost gateway to the wider Schengen area draws steady interest from the UAE year-round. Applying several weeks ahead of any peak season, rather than a few days before, reduces the risk of a delayed decision affecting travel plans.
Practical Tips for UAE Applicants
Keep copies of every submitted document, ensure your passport has at least two blank pages and remains valid well beyond your planned return date, and make sure your UAE residence visa, if applicable, is valid for a comfortable margin beyond your trip. Since Bulgaria now sits fully inside the Schengen area, a Bulgarian visa functions exactly like a French, Italian, or Greek one for onward travel within the zone.
