Digital Schengen Visa: What It Means for UAE Applicants

The European Union has approved a new online system for Schengen visa applications, and the first Schengen country has already switched over. From 1 June 2026, Italy began processing both short stay Schengen visas and national long stay visas through a single digital platform, ending the requirement to submit paper application forms for most applicants. For UAE residents who regularly apply for tourist, business or family visit visas to Europe, this is the clearest sign yet that the region is moving away from counter based applications.

What the EU Has Actually Approved

In November 2023, the Council of the European Union gave final approval to two regulations that set the legal basis for digitalising the Schengen visa procedure: Regulation (EU) 2023/2667, which creates a single EU Visa Application Platform (EU VAP) for applicants regardless of destination country, and Regulation (EU) 2023/2685, which replaces the paper visa sticker with a digital visa carrying a secure, cryptographically signed barcode. Both regulations entered into force on 27 December 2023, but the European Commission has been clear that the date the new system actually applies will only be set once the technical platform is finished and tested.

According to the European Commission, member states have been given a transition period of up to seven years to move fully onto the EU VAP, meaning the changeover for the whole Schengen area is expected to run through to around 2030. Individual countries are, however, free to modernise their own national systems earlier, which is exactly what Italy has done.

What Changed in Italy From June 2026

Italy’s Interior and Foreign Affairs ministries confirmed in a February 2026 briefing that Italy would move to an end to end electronic visa platform from 1 June 2026, covering both Schengen short stay (type C) visas, including tourist, business and family visit applications, and Italian national long stay visas. Applicants now complete a single online form, upload their supporting documents and pay the visa fee through a government portal linked to the EU’s Visa Information System.

Importantly for UAE applicants, going digital does not remove the need to visit a visa application centre altogether. First time applicants, and anyone whose fingerprints are not already on file within the validity period set by the Visa Code, must still attend a short in person appointment for biometric enrollment. What changes is everything around that appointment: less paperwork to prepare in advance, and, in principle, a faster and more predictable path from submission to decision once the biometric step is done.

What This Means for Appointment Booking in the UAE

For now, applicants booking through VFS Global or BLS International centres in Dubai and Abu Dhabi should not expect every Schengen country to move online at once. The shift is phased, country by country, and most consulates represented in the UAE still require the standard in person submission. The practical takeaway is to check the specific requirements published by the consulate or visa centre for your destination country before assuming a digital option is available, and to continue booking your appointment as early as possible regardless of whether the application form itself is digital.

As with any Schengen application, embassies usually decide within 15 calendar days of submission, as set by the Schengen Visa Code, and some cases take longer. A digital form does not change this legal processing window; it only changes how the paperwork reaches the consulate.
