ETIAS Delayed to 2027: What UAE Residents Should Know

ETIAS is no longer expected to launch in 2026. Reporting in July 2026 said the EU agency that runs the system, eu-LISA, considers a 2026 start no longer feasible, and the slowdown traces back to congestion caused by the Entry Exit System at Schengen borders. For UAE residents planning trips to Europe, the change affects some travellers and not others, so it is worth knowing exactly where you stand.

What ETIAS Is and Why the Launch Slipped

ETIAS, the European Travel Information and Authorisation System, is a pre travel screening process for visitors who do not need a Schengen visa. It was expected to go live in the final quarter of 2026. No new start date has been announced. The European Commission says it will publish the date several months before launch, and current reporting points to 2027. The European Union’s IT agency for large scale border systems pointed to slow deployment and technical problems as the reason for the delay.

How EES Border Queues Led to the Delay

The Entry Exit System, known as EES, became fully operational across the Schengen area on 10 April 2026. It replaces the old passport stamp with a digital record of entry and exit, including a facial image and fingerprints for most non EU travellers. The rollout has not been smooth everywhere. Some European airports reported queues of three to five hours during peak summer travel, concentrated at a small number of busy crossing points. EU officials decided it made more sense to stabilise EES before adding a second new system on top of it.

Who Actually Needs ETIAS

UAE Residents Who Hold a Schengen Visa

If you are applying for a Schengen visa from the UAE, whether for tourism, business, or a family visit, ETIAS does not apply to you. Visa required nationalities, including Indian, Pakistani, Filipino, and Bangladeshi passport holders, will keep going through the standard visa process regardless of when ETIAS eventually launches.

UAE Residents From Visa Exempt Countries

Around 60 nationalities that currently travel to the Schengen area without a visa, including US, UK, Canadian, and Australian passport holders based in Dubai or Abu Dhabi, will eventually need ETIAS before flying to Europe. That requirement is simply on hold for now. When it does launch, the fee is expected to stay at 20 euros, the authorisation will be valid for three years, and a grace period of around six months is expected so travellers are not caught out on day one.

What This Means for Your Next Trip From Dubai or Abu Dhabi

For now, nothing changes at the airport. Visa exempt travellers can keep flying to the Schengen area exactly as before, without applying for anything in advance. Everyone, regardless of nationality, should expect the EES fingerprint and facial scan step at the border, and it is worth building extra time into airport connections until that process runs faster. If you still need to apply for a Schengen visa itself, embassies usually decide within 15 calendar days of submission, as set by the Schengen Visa Code, and some cases take longer, so apply as early as your travel dates allow.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need ETIAS if I already have a Schengen visa?

No. ETIAS is only for travellers who do not currently need a visa to enter the Schengen area. If you hold or are applying for a Schengen visa, ETIAS does not apply to your trip.

When will ETIAS actually launch?

The EU has not confirmed an exact date. Current reporting points to 2027, and the European Commission says it will announce the start date several months in advance.

Will the EES queues affect me if I already have a Schengen visa?

Yes. EES applies to all non EU short stay travellers at the border, regardless of whether you needed a visa to get there, so plan extra time for the fingerprint and facial scan step when you land or depart.
