Urgent Italy Visa Appointment: UAE Applicant Guide
UAE residents applying for an Italy Schengen visa cannot buy a faster decision by paying for an earlier appointment, and unlike most Schengen countries, Italy does not use one visa centre operator across the Emirates. Applications are split between VFS Global in Dubai and BLS International in Abu Dhabi, and which one you use is decided by the emirate that issued your residence visa, not by which centre shows an earlier slot.
Which Centre Handles Italy Visa Applications in the UAE
There is no single operator. The Consulate General of Italy in Dubai works with VFS Global, and the Embassy of Italy in Abu Dhabi works with BLS International. Neither centre accepts an applicant outside its jurisdiction, so you cannot apply through both to see which has an earlier date. Italy also runs a consular portal called Prenot@Mi, but it is not the route for a Schengen visa in the UAE.
Dubai and the Northern Emirates: VFS Global
The Dubai centre is operated by VFS Global at The Gate, DIFC, and appointments are booked on the VFS Global Italy portal for Dubai. The consulate states that to apply in Dubai the UAE residence visa must have been issued by the authorities of Dubai or one of the Northern Emirates. VFS limits bookings to one appointment per user ID, email and mobile number, and applications cannot be lodged more than six months before travel.
One 2026 change matters here. In a notice dated March 2026, the consulate confirmed that visa services resumed gradually from Monday 23 March after a period of restriction linked to regional instability, with business applications accepted again through dedicated slots. The same notice says services remain subject to change depending on local conditions, so check the consulate news page before planning around a booking.
Abu Dhabi Emirate: BLS International
The Abu Dhabi centre has been run by BLS International since 1 September 2023, at Nation Towers Mall, 1st Floor, F24, Al Bateen. It accepts short stay applications only from residents of Abu Dhabi Emirate, covering Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Al Dhafra, meaning a UAE visa issued by the Abu Dhabi Government. Submission is Monday to Friday, 09:00 to 15:00, and both the embassy and BLS require applicants to book on the BLS portal themselves, without intermediaries.
Legitimate Ways to Get an Earlier Italy Visa Appointment
Book Inside the Full Six Month Window
The Visa Code allows an application to be lodged up to six months before travel and, as a rule, no later than 15 calendar days before departure. Most UAE applicants start far too late. Reporting in May 2026 put Schengen appointment waits from the UAE at roughly six to eight weeks, with slots for popular countries going within minutes. Booking early is not a trick, but it is the only method that reliably works.
Watching for Cancellations and Newly Released Slots
Both portals release slots as applicants cancel or reschedule, and VFS Global has said publicly that appointments appear on its website frequently, that booking there is free, and that waitlist tools exist for selected countries. Checking at different times of day, and staying flexible on the date, is what turns someone else’s cancellation into your appointment.
Paid Optional Services and What They Actually Buy
BLS publishes its Abu Dhabi price list openly: Gold Premium Lounge at AED 325, Silver at AED 285, Bronze at AED 245, a standard Premium Lounge at AED 142, Prime Time Appointment at AED 98, Flexible Appointment at AED 97.26, mobile biometric collection at AED 163 and express same day courier at AED 40. VFS Global lists its own optional services on the Dubai portal.
What they do is worth stating precisely. Prime Time allows an appointment outside standard hours, Monday to Friday between 15:00 and 17:00. Flexible Appointment allows arrival at any point during submission hours. The lounges add document checking, form filling help and comfort on the day. None moves you up the calendar. BLS puts it in writing: “Using the Gold Premium lounge service doesn’t guarantee the right to grant the visa or process the visa faster, Issuance of Visa to Italy is the sole decision of Embassy of Italy in Abu Dhabi.”
Documented Emergency or Compelling Reasons
Article 9(3) of the Visa Code states that in justified cases of urgency, the consulate may allow applicants to lodge their applications either without appointment, or an appointment shall be given immediately. This is a real route, not a routine one. It covers documented situations such as a bereavement, urgent medical treatment or a business trip confirmed at short notice, and it requires evidence. Contact the mission directly. The decision is theirs.
Ignore Anyone Selling You a Slot
BLS states that it has no affiliation whatsoever with any agents, including travel companies and typing offices, and is not responsible for fees paid to them. VFS Global has warned UAE applicants against third parties promising appointments or guaranteed visas.
An Earlier Appointment Does Not Mean a Faster Italy Visa Decision
An earlier slot changes only when the file reaches the mission, not how long the mission takes. The Visa Code sets a decision period of 15 calendar days from lodging an admissible application, extendable to a maximum of 45 calendar days where further scrutiny is needed. VFS Global states that Italy tourist and business applications from Dubai take up to 15 calendar days from the next working day after submission, with student applications at 15 to 90 days and work or digital nomad applications up to 120 days. BLS is blunter about the season, noting that processing time varies by nationality and time of year, “summer period being the slowest”, and that an applicant’s lack of a travel plan will not make the file a priority. The fee remains EUR 90, shown by BLS as AED 386.
Practical Tips for UAE Residents
- Check which emirate issued your residence visa before booking. That decides whether you use VFS Global in Dubai or BLS in Abu Dhabi.
- Book only on the official VFS Global or BLS portal. Booking is free and third party bookings are not accepted.
- If Italy is not where you will spend the most nights, you may be applying to the wrong country. Italy must be the main destination, or the first point of entry where nights are equal.
- Have travel medical insurance, financial documents and employment or NOC letters ready before a slot appears.
- Plan for the EU Entry/Exit System, fully operational since 10 April 2026, which registers facial image and fingerprints at the border. It affects your arrival in Italy, not your visa appointment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does VFS Global or BLS handle Italy visa applications in the UAE?
Both, in different emirates. VFS Global runs the Dubai centre for the Consulate General, and BLS International runs the Abu Dhabi centre for the Embassy of Italy.
My residence visa was issued in a different emirate from where I live. Which centre do I use?
The issuing authority decides. Abu Dhabi accepts applicants whose UAE visa was issued by the Abu Dhabi Government, covering Abu Dhabi, Al Ain and Al Dhafra. Dubai requires a visa issued by Dubai or a Northern Emirate.
Does paying for a premium lounge or prime time appointment get me an earlier date?
No. Prime Time moves the hour of your appointment, not its place in the calendar. BLS states that the premium lounge does not guarantee the right to grant the visa or process it faster, and that issuance is the sole decision of the Embassy of Italy.
How long does Italy take to decide after I submit?
The Visa Code sets 15 calendar days from lodging an admissible application, extendable to 45 in individual cases. VFS Global quotes up to 15 calendar days for Italy tourist and business applications from Dubai, and longer for student and work categories.
Can I get an urgent appointment if I have a genuine emergency?
Possibly. The Visa Code permits a consulate to allow lodging without an appointment, or to give one immediately, in justified cases of urgency. You contact the mission directly with documentary evidence. It is not guaranteed, and it is not something an agent can arrange for you.
