Schengen Visa Centres in the UAE by Country (VFS, BLS)

Most Schengen countries collect UAE applications through VFS Global, usually at its centres in both Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Spain uses BLS International, Italy splits between VFS Global in Dubai and BLS International in Abu Dhabi, Slovakia lists both providers, and Poland and Slovenia take applications directly at their embassies in Abu Dhabi. The table below shows every one of the 29 Schengen countries, where UAE residents lodge, and the official page to book on, checked against official sources on 24 September 2026.

The centre only collects your file, fingerprints and photo. The embassy or consulate of the country you are applying to makes the decision, and no centre or agent can change that.

“Check the official page” means we could not confirm that detail from an official source today, so please verify it on the linked page before you book. Where a country lists both cities, it has not published a rule tying you to one of them on the pages we checked.

Norway status notice: on 24 September 2026, the visa update page of the Norwegian Embassy in Abu Dhabi still said, under a March 2026 entry, that new applications cannot be submitted at the VFS Global centres in the Gulf region until further notice. Check that page and the VFS Norway page before you plan around a Norway appointment.

No TLScontact: none of the official embassy or government pages we checked for the 29 countries names TLScontact as a Schengen provider in the UAE. France-Visas names VFS Global for France.

For a country by country walk through of documents and booking, see our Schengen country guides.

Which country should you apply to?

The table only helps once you know which country is responsible for your trip. The rule comes from the EU Visa Code, and the European Commission sums it up simply:

  • One country: apply to that country.
  • Several countries: apply to the country where you will spend the longest time.
  • Equal time in each: apply to the country you will enter first.

Some missions check this at the counter. Switzerland, for example, says applications that list a different Schengen country as the main destination “will not be accepted”. Booking whichever country shows the earliest slot, when it is not your main destination, is a common reason for problems. Our guide to the main destination rule and visa shopping walks through real itineraries.

Timing matters too. You can apply no earlier than 6 months before the trip and, as a rule, no later than 15 days before it. The normal decision time is 15 days, which can be extended up to 45 days when the consulate needs to look more closely.

Dubai or Abu Dhabi: can you choose?

For most countries in the table, both cities are listed and the official pages we checked do not tie you to one. A few countries do set rules, and they are the ones people get wrong:

  • Germany: residents of Dubai and the Northern Emirates submit at VFS Global in Dubai; residents of Abu Dhabi and Al Ain submit at VFS Global in Abu Dhabi. The German Consulate General in Dubai decides all of them. Read our Germany visa guide for the waitlist process.
  • Italy: this is based on who issued your UAE residence visa, not where you live. An Abu Dhabi Government visa (Abu Dhabi, Al Ain, Al Dhafra) goes to BLS International in Abu Dhabi. Dubai and Northern Emirates residents go through the Consulate General in Dubai via VFS Global. See our Italy visa guide.
  • France: France-Visas lists one centre, VFS Global in Abu Dhabi, and says all French visa applications in the UAE are handled by the consular section in Abu Dhabi. Dubai residents should plan for the trip. More in our France visa guide.
  • Poland and Slovenia: no visa centre. You apply at the embassy in Abu Dhabi, booked through e-konsulat for Poland and by email for Slovenia.
  • Croatia: the Croatian foreign ministry and VFS both point to the visa application centre in Dubai.

Spain uses BLS International centres in both Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Its booking rules differ from VFS countries, so read our Spain BLS booking guide before you start.

What to bring to your appointment

Each country publishes its own checklist, and the provider’s page for your country is the one to follow. Almost every appointment needs the following:

  • Your passport, meeting the country’s validity and blank page rules. Belgium, for example, asks for at least 2 blank pages.
  • Your UAE residence visa and Emirates ID. Austria asks that the residence permit is valid at least 3 months after the requested visa expires, and other missions set their own rules.
  • The completed application form from the country’s own online system where one exists: France-Visas, Visa On Web for Belgium, applyvisa.um.dk for Denmark, UDI for Norway, MIGRIS for Lithuania, e-konsulat for Poland.
  • Your appointment confirmation and the supporting documents from the checklist. Our Schengen documents checklist for UAE residents covers the common ones.

Biometrics

Fingerprints and a photo are taken at the appointment. The Swiss Embassy notes they are not needed again if they were captured within the last 59 months, but the centre decides on the day whether it can reuse them. Our guide to biometric reuse explains when that applies.

The Entry/Exit System (EES)

The EES is separate from your visa appointment. The German Missions in the UAE confirm it became fully operational on 10 April 2026: at the Schengen border your fingerprints and facial image are recorded, and passports are no longer stamped by hand. Expect this on your first entry even if you already gave biometrics at the visa centre. See our EES guide for UAE visa holders.

Common mistakes

  • Booking the wrong provider. Spain is BLS, not VFS. Italy depends on which emirate issued your visa. Slovakia lists both. Check the table before you register anywhere.
  • Booking the wrong country. Picking a country for its free slot rather than your main destination can lead to a rejected or refused file.
  • Skipping the online step. France, Belgium, Denmark, Norway, Lithuania and Switzerland all need an online form, and in some cases payment, before you book.
  • Going to the wrong city. Germany, Italy and France apply city rules. Arriving at the other centre wastes the slot.
  • Paying for “privileged” slots. Belgium says an appointment at VFS is always free of charge and that agents who pretend to have privileged access to slots are fraudulent. Poland says it does not cooperate with any intermediaries. Read our appointment scam warning.
  • Using old addresses. VFS has moved offices in the UAE before, and some official pages still show older details. Take the address from your appointment letter.

If you would like help, our team prepares and checks your file and helps you book on the official system. We look for the earliest suitable appointment, and the consulate decides. See appointment booking support.

Frequently asked questions

Which Schengen countries use BLS International in the UAE?

On the official pages we checked on 24 September 2026, Spain uses BLS International in Dubai and Abu Dhabi, Italy uses BLS International in Abu Dhabi for Abu Dhabi emirate visa holders, and Slovakia lists BLS International alongside VFS Global. The rest of the countries with a visa centre use VFS Global.

Which Schengen countries do not use a visa centre in the UAE?

Poland and Slovenia take applications directly at their embassies in Abu Dhabi. Poland books appointments through e-konsulat, and Slovenia by email to its consular section. We could not confirm Romania’s current process today, so check the Consulate General of Romania in Dubai page.

Can I apply for a France visa in Dubai?

France-Visas lists one collection point for the UAE, the VFS Global centre in Abu Dhabi, and says all French visa applications in the UAE are handled by the consular section in Abu Dhabi. Dubai residents should plan to travel to Abu Dhabi.

Where do I apply for a Liechtenstein visa from the UAE?

Through Switzerland. The Swiss Embassy in Abu Dhabi handles applications from UAE residents travelling to Switzerland or Liechtenstein, lodged at VFS Global in Dubai or Abu Dhabi.

Who decides my Sweden or Iceland visa if I apply in the UAE?

You lodge at VFS Global in the UAE, but the decision is made abroad. Sweden’s applications are processed by its Regional Hub for Migration in Amman, and Iceland’s by the Embassy of Iceland in New Delhi.

Is a visa centre appointment free?

Belgium states that an appointment slot at VFS is always free of charge and that visa fees are for handling the application, not the appointment. Extra services sold by centres are optional. Check the fee page for your country on its official provider site.

Does the visa centre decide my application?

No. The centre collects your documents and biometrics and passes them on. The embassy or consulate of the country you apply to makes the decision.
