The Schengen Entry Exit System: A Guide for UAE Visa Holders

The Entry Exit System has been fully operational at every external Schengen border crossing point since 10 April 2026, and it applies to far more UAE residents than the headlines about biometric border checks suggest. If you hold a Schengen tourist, business, family visit, or nanny escort visa, the new system changes what happens the moment you land in Europe, even though it has nothing to do with how your visa was approved.

What the Entry Exit System Actually Does

The Entry Exit System, known as EES, is an automated register that records the entries and exits of non EU nationals travelling to the Schengen area for a short stay. It replaces the manual passport stamp with a digital record that includes travel document data, biometric data in the form of fingerprints and a facial image, and the exact date and place of entry and exit. Since its launch the system has already registered more than 145 million entries and exits across the Schengen area.

Who Has to Register, and Who Does Not

This is the part that catches Schengen visa holders off guard. EES exemptions are narrow. They cover nationals of Andorra, Monaco, San Marino, and holders of a Vatican City State passport, along with non EU nationals who hold a long stay visa or a residence permit issued by a country that operates EES, and family members of an EU or EEA citizen who hold a residence card. If you are travelling to Europe from the UAE on a short stay Schengen visa for tourism, business, a family visit, or to bring a nanny with your children, none of these exemptions apply to you. You will be registered in the system with fingerprints and a facial scan the same as any other short stay traveller.

What Happens at the Border Itself

On your first crossing after EES applied to you, expect to spend more time at passport control than you may be used to, since an officer or a self service kiosk will capture your fingerprints and photograph in addition to checking your visa and passport. The rollout has not been uniform at every airport, and some of the busiest hubs introduced the checks gradually to manage queues. Once your biometric data is on file, later crossings during the life of that data are generally quicker, since the system already has your details.

What This Means for Your Trip

There is no fee for EES registration itself, and there is nothing to complete in advance. The checks happen at the border, not during your visa application. It is worth building extra time into your airport connections for your first trip after getting a new Schengen visa, particularly if you are travelling with children or an elderly family member, since biometric enrolment for a group takes longer than a single traveller moving through a kiosk. EES also does not change how your visa itself is decided. Embassies usually decide within 15 calendar days of submission, as set by the Schengen Visa Code, and some cases take longer, regardless of how EES affects your entry once the visa is granted.
